Foul Weather Gear
66* North (can't find the degree symbol on my keyboard, will use asterisk instead) has great foul weather gear, including very sexy fleece sweaters for men and women. Great colors and good cuts for just about anyone. Lots of coats and parkas, hats, scarfs, etc. For kids too. Nice way to buy Icelandic if you are opposed to wool, though a wool sweater is the ultimate native purchase. The name 66* North is a reference to the latitude bearing for Reykjavík, i.e. a scientific way to say "super duper far away from the equator and the warm, sandy beaches of places like Seychelles and the Solomon Islands, and way too close to the North Pole." But as Scandinavians say, there's no such thing as bad weather, only poor clothing.
You can find a 66* North store right downtown on Bankastræti, the lower end of Laugavegur, the main shopping street. There is also a store in Kringlan, the mall, and most hotel boutiques have a selection of their stuff as well.

One thing about icelandic wool sweaters is that although the stores that sell to tourists have traditional icelandic wool sweaters they have started to carry these awful norwegian buttoned sweaters that have nothing to do with Iceland. Those sweaters are however more colorful and sell better.
It pains me to have to walk past these stores every day and see them try to sell this crap as "icelandic".
yeah, tell me about it! i saw these awful stuffed viking-horned hats in red white and blue with the name of some local bank on them (i think it was even búnaðarbankinn, now defunct!) for sale in a wool shop for, like, 1500 kr!!!
what is up with that??? theylooked like promo give-aways that the shop keeper had hoarded and was trying to sell. i'm sure drunk tourists coming out of Dubliners snatch them up like hotcakes...
Actually the latitude bearing of Reykjavík isn't 66°N, it's only 64°N. To find the 66°N latitude you'd have to go to the north of Iceland.

I have to total agree with the 66°North clothing. I so fell in love with the sexy 66°North fleece sweaters (and the company's advertisements) that I bought three fleece sweaters when I vacationed in Iceland the last week of August 2004...and for someone who lives in New Orleans, LA, USA (N30° W90°) that says a lot! Best of all...everyone I know is envious of my fleece sweaters. You are very lucky to live in such a beautiful country.
I've got three sweaters myself, all the same cut in different colors. When you find something that works, stick to it, right?
