Bums, Reykjavik

While cruising through GummiE's blog, I found a link to this site about a very important issue that I know has affected me personally. Check it out.

The above (generally content-looking) bums, by the way, most probably do not have blogs...

And one more thing: I have to say that offers of Hurricane Katrina disaster relief by Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, who God's own Pat Robertson said should simply be assasinated(watch him say it here), and Cuba's intrepid Fidel Castro prove very ingenous "diplomacy". Even Kofi Annan's UN relief-offer announcement the other day had a hint of irony and slight deprecation. Suddenly the lion has a thorn in its paw and all the "mice" of the world are offering to help pull it out, even the Evil Communist Enemy mice. Because its about people's survival, isn't it? Even if those people don't, in general, wear suits to work...

Ok, Jared. I don't need that kind of excessive rant on my web site.

Have you ever been a minimum wage worker with maybe a child or two and not enough money to own a car or even, at the last minute, buy a plane/train/bus ticket out of town? I'm white, I'm attractive, I'm highly educated and hard-working and I have been there.

I'm disappointed to meet the real you in this way on my site. Please think twice before writing in my comments again.

Actually, there were thousands that had absolutely no way of making it out even if they wanted, and even now, they're not even allowed to *walk* out and didn't start received aid for four days. The government *is* at grave fault.

(BTW, Maria - Chavez is from Venezuela.)

Thanks for the correction, Jim. I Googled Chavez to be sure, but still wrote Nicaragua! duhh. I love that this blog is interactive and self-editing...!

I've been watching CNN all week, and even conservative Fox News, and I think that the live footage and location reporting says a lot about the lack of immediate action. Pointing fingers or trying to find a place to lay blame is not always an attractive course of action, but I think the situation in the US South degrading as it was before our eyes on live television, is going to give many an American a reason to consider again their blind fatih in their government. Which is a good thing. We shouldn't ever sit back and assume that nothing needs to change.

I personally believe that, in the end, the flaw in the US system, and in most large systems (govermental or not), is an overburdened, overcomplicated bureaucracy. The sad fact in New Orleans and coastal Mississippi is that taxpayer-funded federal emergency systems that citizens assumed was in place to assist them in times of need did not pull through as well or as soon as it should have, or as many many people thought it could have.

Blame aside, a natural "Act of God" has devastated the lives of well over a million people, of all races, colors, status and religion. They deserve our sympathy and aid. Period.

Chavez is quite smart, especially in the political arena. And he seems to have much higher moral intelligence than ol' Pat

oh, and about New Orleans... I've read that at least 30% of the population lived below the poverty line & that approximately 1 in 5 did not own a car. Add to that the fact that many people live paycheck to paycheck and already have trouble feeding their families....
